What Happened Today

I got a call from the tour manager at 1:25am this morning saying the Uber canceled on him and the bus driver needed a ride back to the venue. This happened after I drifted off to sleep about an hour earlier. I didn't mind getting the call and indicated to the TM to give me a ring if this situation arose (and I expected it would). Even an hour worth of sleep helped put enough fuel in my tank for this final run. It felt like being woken up from sleep in the middle of the night a few weeks ago when I was sailing.

I drove to the hotel, picked up the bus driver, took him to the venue, and then back home. I went into sensory denervation mode where I lay very still with a special eye mask that contains speakers that I can play white noise through (airplane cabin sound is my personal favorite right now). Without difficulty I fell back asleep until my body natual woke up.

When I peeled off the eye mask I noticed some light so I knew it had to be after 6am. I cracked open an eye and saw the clock reading 6:33am. Staying bed was an option, but I knew it wouldn't result in any more sleep. I'd need to get a nap later.

So up and at it. 6 miles at easy effort with the sun starting to shine. Keeping it really light without any kind of attention to the pace.

I'm not sure I would have been able to tolerate a big "something of substance" work out this morning. I felt grateful to be up, but also grateful I didn't need to push the pace any. As the run progressed, my pace increased in a natural way, but my heart rate stayed even.

This past week was the first full week of "normal" training. Between being out of town for the sail trip and family vacation, the start here has been a little off kilter. Not awful, but I'm hoping to start to hit a bit more of a rhythm especially with school starting in another 8 days. That will mean adjustments to the timing of runs and more rigidity in the calendar, but nothing like the interruptions brought on by the family vacation.
